Introduction to Prepositions

Intro. to Prepositions is a well structured lesson plan for beginners.

Objective:

  1. The students will learn the words for objects used (book, notebook, chalk, chair, bottle, and marker).
  2. The students will learn six widely used propositions.
  3. The students will be able to formulate sentences using vocabulary and prepositions.

Time: 50 minutes

Material requirements: if the lesson requires specific resources, add them here. If not, delete this paragraph.

Motivation

The teacher will introduce the topic of the day and start by asking if anyone knows the words for all objects used.  All objects will be present to provide visual aid and each word will be written on the board.

Presentation

The following table will be on the board prior to class (This was made for Romanian students. Please adapt it to your students’ native language).  Have each student copy the table in their notebooks.  The teacher will allow more advanced students to introduce the English words for each proposition.

  • Once all the English words are listed, the teacher will use the vocabulary and prepositions to formulate sentences.  The teacher will provide a visual aid with the objects that have been placed appropriately at the front of the class in order to represent each preposition used (ex. Place the bottle under a chair at the front of the room to show that “The bottle is under the chair”).  Each sentence will be repeated by the class as a group.
  • Once the table has been completed and copied by each student, the teacher will then ask if anyone knows how to say “Where is…” in English.  The equivalent will be introduced and practiced as a class so that the students know how to ask where an object is.

Practice

  • The teacher will then pose questions to the class as a whole and then individual students as needed.  For example, “Where is the notebook?”  The students will be able to use the table and the existing sentences to practice the use of each proposition and vocabulary word.

Application

  • The objects will then be rearranged so that they each hold a different position in relation to the other objects.
  • The class and/or individual students will then be asked questions so that they are required to formulate new sentences based on the new position of the given object.
  • Depending on the progress of the lesson and level of the students, the table can be erased and the students can be asked to close their notebooks.  It will be up to the teacher to determine if/when the aid of the table can be taken away.
